Amiko Mayeno

Amiko Mayeno works with schools and non-profit organizations to:

  • Build powerful school-family-community partnerships for student well being and academic success
  • Establish strong cross-cultural school-based relationships
  • Increase access to quality science and outdoor education programming for low income communities

Services
Amiko specializes in inclusive program planning research and evaluation, coaching, facilitation and training of administrators, teachers, and parents.  Her program evaluation approach draws from appreciative inquiry and empowerment evaluation methodologies.

Building family-school partnerships.
To ensure continuity and collaboration of student educational experience between home and school, Ms. Mayeno:

  • Establishes systems of parent-student-teacher goal setting and monitoring. 
  • Develops systems of regular progress reports from teachers to parents.
  • Facilitates needs assessment to shape school site plans that include input from school staff, administrators, parents, and community organizations.
  • Coaches and trains staff to increase the attendance and effectiveness of parent-teacher conferences, with an emphasis on building trust and open communication between the two parties.
  • Coaches and trains teachers on how to organize successful home visits.
  • Organizes and/or leads parent leadership trainings.

To increase parent engagement in schools, Ms. Mayeno works with families and schools to develop systems, including:

  • Room parent systems, where parent leaders act as liaisons between teachers and parents.
  • Parent tutor systems to help support students that are falling behind.

Clients
Amiko’s clients have included: The Oakland Unified School District, Fred. T. Korematsu Discovery Academy, Esperanza Elementary; Lawrence Hall of Science (The ACES Project working with Grass Valley Elementary and Franklin Elementary); The Oakland Museum of California, and the Environmental Education Learning Community. Her roles have included founder of the Eco-Oakland program, teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District and researcher for the California Department of Health Services and the San Francisco Department of Health Services.
